A botched interview, a new roommate, and an elevator ride that quietly changes everything — Shang Zhi Tao's first day in Beijing doesn't go the way she planned.
Shang Zhi Tao doesn't arrive in Beijing on a winning streak. Her first stop is a job interview at a name-brand agency, and it goes badly enough that she walks out with nothing to show for it. Rather than dwell on it, she starts scrambling for footing in a city that owes her nothing — hunting for work, adjusting to being on her own, and settling into a new place with a roommate she's only just met. The episode doesn't rush this part. It wants viewers to feel exactly how unglamorous a fresh start actually is before anything resembling romance shows up.
That romance arrives in an elevator, of all places — the kind of meet-cute the show doesn't oversell. Zhi Tao clocks Luan Nian before he clocks her, and when he finally does turn to match her voice to her face, it's a small moment that the camera lingers on just long enough to matter. Neither of them says much. They don't need to. It's the first sign that whatever happens between them later, this is where it quietly starts.
The Boss With a Reputation
Once Zhi Tao lands inside the agency, her colleague Lumi wastes no time filling her in on exactly who she's dealing with. Luan Nian, Lumi explains, is brilliant and sharp-eyed enough to know exactly when to push and when to hold back — and just cold enough that people can't quite get a read on him, which somehow only makes him more magnetic. Zhi Tao points out that the description makes him sound like a villain. Lumi doesn't disagree, and neither of them seems especially bothered by that.
It's a playful exchange, but it does real work for the episode — establishing Luan Nian's reputation secondhand before Zhi Tao has any real one-on-one interaction with him, so that every later scene between them carries the weight of what she's already been warned about.
Neither of them says much in that elevator. They don't need to — it's already where things quietly start.
A Rocky First Day on the Job
True to the premise everyone already knows going in, Luan Nian doesn't ease Zhi Tao into the role. His first real instruction to her is blunt enough to double as a dare: quit now and save them both the trouble. It's less a genuine dismissal than a test of whether she'll fold under pressure — and the whole point of episode one is that she doesn't. She stays, she absorbs the hit to her confidence, and she starts looking for the first opening to prove she belongs there.
The episode ends without any grand declaration from either lead, which fits the show's whole approach so far. This isn't a story rushing toward romance; it's laying the groundwork for two people who are going to take a long time softening toward each other — one thawing out of self-control, the other blooming in spite of a rough start.
