When her colleague Lumi calls to check in, Zhi Tao doesn't hide where she is — and that honesty turns out to matter. Luan Nian hears about it and, instead of writing the whole thing off as a rookie wasting her time, sees an opening. Old resentment loses to opportunity, and Mr. Li agrees to collaborate.
It's a satisfying beat precisely because of how it happens — not through Luan Nian pulling rank, but through Zhi Tao putting herself on the line and delivering. The show is very deliberately building the case, one small win at a time, that she belongs in this world on her own merit.
He doesn't pull rank to fix it for her. He just makes sure she's standing in front of the right person at the right moment — and lets her take it from there.
The Dinner Where Luan Nian Steps In
That evening, the whole team gathers for a celebration dinner, and Lumi dresses Zhi Tao up for the occasion. It should be a straightforward win to enjoy — until Mr. Li starts paying her too much attention, plying her with drinks and pushing questions about her personal life that she clearly isn't comfortable answering. It's an uncomfortable dynamic the show doesn't linger on gratuitously, but it doesn't pretend it isn't there either.
Watching her grow visibly nervous, Luan Nian's tone shifts — he steps in, softens, and tells her to look after herself and reach out to him or Lumi if anything's wrong. It's a small gesture, easy to miss, but it's the first real crack in the ice-cold persona Lumi warned her about back in episode one. Meanwhile, back at the apartment, a case of mistaken identity threatens to upend the fragile peace at Sun Yu's place — a subplot the show is clearly setting up to pay off later rather than resolve right away.
